Membership

“Membership” is a word that we use to communicate sincere Christian commitment to a solid biblical church.  Our use of the word reflects a covenant relationship involving a public promise to live and serve according to God’s Word in support of the prosperity and mission of Christ’s church.  Becoming a member at Cornerstone Church is not like joining a gym or signing up for classes.  It is a solemn vow to deny yourself and to submit your time, energy, and resources to love our brethren and further the Kingdom of God through the ministry of this church.  Membership at Cornerstone is a call to be like Christ who “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).

That level of personal commitment is often entirely foreign to anyone unfamiliar with the New Testament and typically unfamiliar to many who have grown up in professing Christian churches.  For that reason, the membership process at Cornerstone is an opportunity for you to learn the doctrine and practice of the church while you take the time that you need to more fully understand the responsibilities laid upon you when you commit to following Christ in the context of His church (Luke 14:25-35).  Nominalism is characteristic of the modern professing church.  Like Sardis, many churches display an outward appearance of life, but they are dead (Revelation 3:1).  The leaven of nominalism must not be allowed root in true churches of Christ.

For these reasons and others, the membership process at Cornerstone is a discipleship-based process rather than a classroom-based course.  Much of the learning is self-paced and will involve conversations and interviews along the way.  Though we hope you will pursue this process with diligence, there is no rush.  The goal of the process is to learn.  So “apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to words of knowledge” (Proverbs 23:12), that you may gain understanding and walk in wisdom.
